Schiavone cruises past Govortsova to claim Kremlin Cup
Moscow, Russia (Sports Network) - Italian Francesca Schiavone easily defeated Belarus' Olga Govortsova for her second career WTA Tour title Sunday at the $1 million Kremlin Cup.
It was the second finals appearance in as many weeks for the eighth-seeded Schiavone, who ended runner-up to Australian Samantha Stosur in Osaka last week.
The 2005 Moscow runner-up posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Govortsova one day removed from rolling to an equally convincing 6-4, 6-0 pasting of Ukrainian Alona Bondarenko in the semifinals. The 29-year-old Schiavone is now 2-10 in finals appearances. Her lone previous triumph came at Bad Gastein in 2007.
Govortsova, who defeated Russian Alisa Kleybanova 6-2, 6-1 in the other semifinal Saturday, fell to 0-2 in career Tour finals. The 21-year-old was runner-up at Memphis in 2008.
This was the third meeting between Schiavone and Govortsova, with the former now owning a 2-1 edge in the head-to-head series.
Schiavone pocketed $157,427 for the win.
