  • Federer in Masters Cup group with Murray, Roddick

Shanghai, China (Sports Network) - The groups were revealed Wednesday for next week's season-ending Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai, where Roger Federer is the two-time defending champion.

The U.S. Open champ Federer will play in the round-robin Red Group that also includes U.S. Open runner-up Andy Murray, Andy Roddick and Masters Cup rookie Gilles Simon. The world No. 2 Federer became the top seed for next week when top-ranked Rafael Nadal announced his withdrawal from the lucrative event, citing fatigue and a knee injury, earlier this week. Simon joined the exclusive eight-player field when the Wimbledon, French Open and Olympic champion Nadal pulled out. Nadal will still finish this season as the year-end No. 1.

The 13-time major champion Federer, who has won the Masters Cup four times, beat David Ferrer in last year's final.

The four-player Blue Group in Shanghai will feature second-seeded Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic, Nikolay Davydenko and Masters Cup rookies Jo- Wilfried Tsonga and Juan Martin del Potro. Tsonga was this year's Aussie Open runner-up to Djokovic and last week's surprise titlist at the Paris Masters.

The 2008 Masters Cup will get underway Sunday at Shanghai's Qi Zhong Stadium.
