  • Switzerland's Frei cleared of charges

Lisbon, Portugal (Sports Network) - Switzerland's Alex Frei was cleared Sunday by UEFA's disciplinary board of possibly spitting on England's Steven Gerrard.

Frei denied the charges on Saturday and waited patiently for a response, confident that a positive verdict would be released by UEFA.

"I'm an emotional player and am not an angel, but this is not in my character," Frei said Saturday in his own defense.

The incident called into question occurred on Thursday during England's 2-0 win over Switzerland. The charges came after a German television station was able to locate the alleged incident.

Italy's Francesco Totti was clearly caught on videotape spitting on Denmark midfielder Christian Poulsen after the two got tangled up earlier in the competition. Unlike Frei, Totti admitted guilt and was then banned for three matches.
