Michigan to host Notre Dame in first night game at Big House

"This will be an unprecedented game day atmosphere that our fans have not experienced at Michigan Stadium," said Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon. "It's a great opportunity to showcase our program, university and Ann Arbor to a primetime viewing audience. This also adds a new chapter to the storied rivalry between our two great programs." The two programs previously played three night games, though each of those occurred at Notre Dame Stadium.

The Wolverines have a 21-15-1 record all-time against the Fighting Irish and are 11-7 against them at Michigan Stadium.

Ohio State extends Tressel's contract again

Under the terms of a previous extension signed in 2008, Tressel had been under contract at Ohio State until January 2013. The new deal calls for the 57-year- old to be at the helm through January 2015, but does not include a salary increase for Tressel, who is already the highest-paid head coach in the Big Ten.

"We wanted to reward Jim for his exemplary work with our football program and lock him in as our coach for an additional two years," said Ohio State director of athletics Gene Smith.

Oregon QB Masoli suspended for entire 2010 season

According to the Oregonian, Ducks head coach Chip Kelly made the announcement at a press conference after Masoli's court appearance. In addition, he suspended running back LaMichael James and kicker Rob Beard for one game apiece after the pair pleaded guilty to harassment in separate incidents.

Masoli, along with teammate Garrett Embry, both admitted to the crimes and were given 12 months probation, 140 hours of community service within eight months and a fine of $5,200 in shared restitution in the following 10 days plus a $100 bench-probation fee, according to the Oregonian.

Both players were accused of stealing two laptops and a guitar from a campus fraternity house in late January.

James agreed to a bargain that dropped four charges -- one count of strangulation, two counts of fourth-degree assault and another count of physical harassment -- stemming from an altercation with his girlfriend.

The 20-year-old Texarkana, Texas-native has already served two of his 10-day jail sentence, according to the Oregonian.

Yankee Stadium bowl game to be called Pinstripe Bowl

Last September, the Yankees announced the bowl game that will feature teams from the Big East and Big 12 conferences. The leagues have a four-year agreement in place, as does New Era.

The inaugural edition of the contest will take place December 30. It will be the first college bowl game in the Bronx since the Gotham Bowl on December 15, 1962, when Nebraska topped Miami-Florida, 36-34, at the original Yankee Stadium.

Georgia Tech QB Shaw to transfer to Georgia Southern

Shaw has been Georgia Tech's top backup for the past two seasons. In 2008 as a true freshman, he completed 15-of-24 passes for 321 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception in seven games (one start). Shaw also rushed 63 times for 200 yards and three scores that season.

The six-foot, 191-pounder saw limited action last year due to a broken collarbone suffered in an August practice.

South Florida RB Ford dismissed from team

Just before the 2009 season began, a report surfaced indicating the football coaching staff violated NCAA rules regarding time limits on off-season workouts and in-season demands.

Six players interviewed by the Detroit Free Press in late August described how the training and practice sessions under Rich Rodriguez far exceeded limits set by the NCAA.

Ole Miss football player dies after workout

Abram started experiencing difficulty shortly after the workout began early in the morning, and trainers began administering aid and called 911. He was taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi in Oxford and passed away several hours later.

"Bennie was a fine young man and a hard worker. He was a great person to be around and a well-mannered young man. His loss is so tragic. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and all who knew Bennie," Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt said.

Vanderbilt recruit Bennett dies

Bennett, a star running back at McEachern High School north of Atlanta, died in an apparent murder-suicide, according to The Tennessean.

The paper cited Powder Springs Lieutenant Matt Boyd in reporting that early Thursday, officers heard gunshots as they got to a house. Boyd told the paper that inside they found Bennett, and that the ex-boyfriend of Bennett's mother shot Rajaan Bennett before killing himself.

Arkansas QB Mallett to miss spring practice with broken foot

The website FightOnState.com reported the news Thursday, quoting the legendary coach as saying he had the procedure done in Philadelphia after having trouble reading for the past six months.

The report also said Paterno had another set of glasses made with thinner lenses made. He told the outlet he doesn't need them, but felt "strange" without glasses.

NCAA puts UCF on probation for major violations

The violations include at least 209 impermissible telephone calls and about 100 text messages to 27 recruits or their parents over nearly 1 1/2 years. UCF reported the violations to the NCAA itself.

In addition to the self-imposed probation lasting from February 11, 2010 to February 10, 2012, the school also self-imposed recruiting restrictions, which were completed this season. Two former staff members were given two-week suspensions at their current institutions.

Florida State vacates wins

The NCAA had denied an appeal by Florida State last month to overturn the vacation-of-records penalty. All that was left was Sunday's determination of which contests the ineligible student-athletes participated.

The NCAA's Division I Committee on Infractions originally levied the records penalty, along with a four-year period of probation and reduced scholarships, in March of 2009 for major violations across 10 sports involving 61 student- athletes during 2006 and 2007.
