  • Borel and Mine That Bird to go separate ways

Louisville, KY (Sports Network) - The union of jockey Calvin Borel and Kentucky Derby champ Mine That Bird has come to an end. Borel has decided not to ride the three-year-old in the West Virginia Derby.

Trainer Chip Woolley and the gelding's owners, Mark Allen and Dr. Leonard Blach, could not get a commitment from the jockey to ride Mine That Bird in the August 1 race. Borel has agreed to ride Warrior's Reward in the Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga on that Saturday. Borel will be aboard the colt in this Saturday's Dwyer Stakes at Belmont Park.

Following the Kentucky Derby victory Borel switched to the filly Rachel Alexandra in the Preakness Stakes. Borel won the Preakness with the filly and then regained the mount on Mine That Bird for the Belmont Stakes. Borel and the gelding finished third in the final jewel of racing's Triple Crown.

Woolley, Allen and Blach have not yet decided on a jockey for Mine That Bird for the race at Mountaineer Park.
