Red Wings lock up Filppula for five years
Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - The Detroit Red Wings locked up another piece of their Stanley Cup-winning puzzle Wednesday, signing forward Valtteri Filppula to a five-year contract.
The left-handed Finn registered 19 goals and 36 points in 78 regular-season games for Detroit. After scoring twice on a pair of penalty shots, he became the first Red Wing since franchise icon Steve Yzerman in 1992 to score on multiple chances in one season.
He followed up with five goals and 11 points in 22 playoff games as the Wings won their fourth Cup in 11 seasons. The 24-year-old scored a goal in the series-clinching Game 6 victory in Pittsburgh.
Filppula, who was a third-round pick in the 2002 draft, has picked up 29 goals and 54 points in 155 career games, all with the Red Wings. He is entering his third full NHL campaign.
