Minnesota gets top seed for NCAA Tournament
Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - Minnesota was awarded the top seed for the 2007 NCAA hockey tournament.
Notre Dame, Clarkson and New Hampshire also garnered top seeds for the 16-team tournament, which will begin next weekend.
Wisconsin, last year's tournament champion, was not among the teams selected to participate.
Minnesota (30-9-3), which won the tournament in 2002 and 2003, will be seeking its sixth title and will begin play Saturday against Air Force (19-15-5) at the West Regional in Denver. The other West Region game will feature Michigan (26-13-1) taking on North Dakota (22-13-5).
Notre Dame (31-6-3), which is seeking its first championship, will take on Alabama-Huntsville (13-19-3) on Friday in Grand Rapids in the Midwest Region. The other game in the Midwest Region will feature Boston University (26-11-1), which last won the tournament in 1995, taking on Michigan State (22-13-3).
Clarkson (25-8-5), which has never won a title, will play on Friday against Massachusetts (20-12-5) in the East Regional located in Rochester, New York. The other East Region matchup will see St. Cloud State (22-10-7) squaring off against Maine (21-14-2), which last won the tournament in 1999.
New Hampshire (26-10-2), in search of its first tournament crown, will play close to home in Manchester and will face Miami-Ohio (23-13-4) on Saturday in the Northeast Region. Boston College (26-11-1), which last won the tournament in 2001, will meet St. Lawrence (23-13-2) in the other Northeast Region matchup.
The victors in the first round will meet the next day in the second round, with those winners advancing to the Frozen Four. The national semifinals will be played April 5 in St. Louis, with the championship game set for April 7.
