  • Kim downs O'Hair in Kiwi Challenge playoff

Hawkes Bay, New Zealand (Sports Network) - Anthony Kim only needed a bogey on the first playoff hole Thursday to defeat Sean O'Hair and win the Kiwi Challenge.

Kim, who was the runner-up to Hunter Mahan in 2008, closed with a five-under 66 at Cape Kidnappers Golf Resort. O'Hair birdied the 18th hole to shoot two- under 69 and join Kim at five-under-par 137.

The duo headed to the 650-yard, par-five 15th for the playoff hole. O'Hair had trouble with the trees left of the fairway leading to a double-bogey. Kim needed four shots to reach the green, then two-putted for bogey and the win.

"It feels wonderful," said Kim, who collected $1 million for the victory. "I did what I had to do to win, and fortunately I made a couple putts." O'Hair led after the completion of the first round earlier Thursday.

The opening round was suspended Wednesday due to high winds with O'Hair in the lead through 16 holes.

The round was completed Thursday with O'Hair's 68 good for a one-shot lead over Camilo Villegas.

"That tee shot just doesn't appeal to my eye," said O'Hair of the playoff. "I probably should have hit a five-wood and just blocked it out to the right. But at 650 yards you feel like you have to hit driver. The bottom line is I just didn't execute.

"But I played really well, well enough to win. If I had just made a par on 15 the first time around, I wouldn't have been in a playoff." Mahan took third place at minus-two after shooting 67 in the second and final round. Villegas rounded out the four-player field. The Colombian closed with a one-over 72 to end at one-under-par 141.
