  • Women's British Open heading to Hoylake

New York, NY (Sports Network) - For the first time its in storied history, the Royal Liverpool Golf Club at Hoylake will host in the Women's British Open in 2012.

The announcement was made Monday that Hoylake will host the LPGA Tour's fourth and final major of the 2012 season.

With the summer Olympics also being played that year, in London, and golf being included, the date for the Women's British Open was pushed back to September 13-16 so that the championship will not interfere with the Olympics.

This announcement ensures the Women's British Open will be contested for three straight years on three of the top Open Championship venues. Hoylake has hosted 11 Open Championships with Tiger Woods winning in 2006, the last time Hoylake hosted the British Open.

"We are absolutely delighted to be introducing Royal Liverpool Golf Club at Hoylake to the Ricoh British Women's Open course rotation," said Shona Malcolm, the Ladies' Golf Union's CEO. "The Ladies' Golf Union is committed to playing the Women's British Open at the best British courses and it is a great coup for the top players to be heading to such an esteemed venue. Adding this news to previous announcement that Carnoustie will host the 2011 Women's Open and as well as our return to St. Andrews in 2013 for a second time, we have a thrilling few years ahead of us." The 2010 Women's British Open will be contested at Royal Birkdale Golf Club, where Catriona Matthew is the defending champion.
