Ross, Rockett & Jacas earn NFL Europa weekly honors
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Running back DERRICK ROSS of the Kansas City Chiefs, safety RON ROCKETT of the Frankfurt Galaxy, and kicker ANDREW JACAS of the Berlin Thunder are the NFL Europa League Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week for games played the first week of the 2007 season (April 14), the league announced today.
Ross rushed for 120 yards on 29 carries and scored on a 16-yard touchdown run in Colognes 24-18 victory over Hamburg. He also added three receptions for 25 yards.
"Derrick had a great effort in Hamburg and he really ran the football well," said Centurions head coach DAVID DUGGAN.
Rockett, a University of Wyoming product, posted a team-high eight solo tackles and two passes defensed in Frankfurts 30-14 win over Amsterdam. His third-quarter interception of Amsterdam quarterback Drew Olson set up a Galaxy field goal as Frankfurt took its first step in defending last seasons World Bowl XIV crown.
Jacas made NFL Europa history by becoming the first kicker to convert two four-point field goals in the same game. He kicked field goals of 53 and 50 yards and added a PAT en route to a nine-point performance in the Thunders 15-3 defeat of the Rhein Fire.
"I knew coming into this season that I might have a chance to kick one or two 50-yard field goals," said Jacas, who is a native of Kingston, Jamaica. "I had been kicking well in practice so I came in prepared. It was a great win, a team win and a very good start for me."
English wide receiver SCOTT MC CREADY was named National Player of the Week. McCready caught seven passes for 100 yards, including a career-long 55-yard touchdown reception, in Hamburgs opening-week loss.
"Scott is an amazing player," said Sea Devils head coach VINCE MARTINO of McCready, who ranks second on NFLELs all-time list in receptions (189) and yards (2,179). "He is always our go-to receiver because he is so knowledgeable and has speed. He is still the big-play guy everybody is going to look to defend when they play Hamburg."
