Sanford on his way out as UNLV coach
Las Vegas, NV (Sports Network) - Mike Sanford will not be back as the head coach of the UNLV football team next season.
School president Neal Smatresk and interim athletic director Jerry Koloskie announced Sunday night that Sanford's contract will be terminated on December 5, a week after the end of the season, his fifth as UNLV head football coach.
The 54-year-old Sanford has compiled a 15-43 overall record at UNLV.
The Rebels are 4-7 this season, including a 2-5 mark in the Mountain West Conference.
They are coming off a 45-17 road loss against Air Force on Saturday and will have their final game November 28 at home against San Diego State.
"We appreciate the service, commitment and dedication that Mike Sanford and his staff provided to UNLV over the last five years," Koloskie said. "Our efforts remain focused on building the Rebels into a winning football program." With one game remaining, Sanford has compiled a record of 7-32 in MWC play.
In December 2004, UNLV hired Sanford as the school's ninth head coach, taking over for the legendary John Robinson.
