Simon's touchdown in final moments lifts BC over Esks
Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Geroy Simon's 62-yard touchdown catch with 12 seconds left led the British Columbia Lions to a 34-31 win over the Edmonton Eskimos.
Simon finished the game with nine catches for 170 yards and two scores, while Buck Pierce went 23-for-38 with 301 yards, three scores and an interception for the Lions (7-7), who have won two straight.
Ricky Ray went 22-for-35 with 323 yards and two touchdowns with a rushing touchdown for the Eskimos (6-8), who have dropped their last three games. Fred Stamps had nine catches for 167 yards and a score, while Maurice Mann also had a receiving touchdown in the loss.
Trailing by nine points to start the fourth quarter, Edmonton cut its deficit to three points on field goals of 23 and 42 yards, respectively, from Noel Prefontaine, with the second one coming with 4 1/2 minutes left in the game.
Edmonton then stopped British Columbia on its ensuing drive to get the ball back.
The team needed just three plays to get into the end zone, as Ray punched the ball in from a yard out for a 31-27 lead with 57 seconds left in the contest.
However, Simon caught a bomb from Pierce as two defenders collided with each other and raced into the end zone from 62 yards out for a 34-31 lead with 12 seconds left.
Prefontaine attempted a desperation 59-yard field goal with one second left, but it fell well short, as the Lions held on for the win.
Paul McCallum's 20-yard field goal a bit less than six minutes into the first quarter gave the Lions a 3-0 lead.
A 50-yard single from Prefontaine late in the first gave Edmonton its only point of the first quarter.
The Lions struck just 15 seconds into the second quarter, as Pierce hit Simon for a 39-yard touchdown and a 10-1 lead.
About five minutes later, British Columbia made it a 17-1 game on a 10-yard touchdown run on Martell Mallett to complete a six-play, 58-yard drive.
Edmonton got in the end zone on its ensuing possession as Ray and Stamps hooked up on a 40-yard score to make it a 17-8 game.
McCallum later hit a 40-yard field goal and Prefontaine put one through the uprights from 16 yards out as time expired in the first half to make it a 20-11 game at the break.
British Columbia started the second half with the ball and put it into the end zone, as Pierce and Ryan Grice-Mullen hooked up on a nine-yard score for a 27-11 lead.
Edmonton, though, responded with a 71-yard drive that took seven plays and was capped on a 12-yard touchdown catch by Mann from Ray to make it a 27-18 game.
Game Notes British Columbia has won three straight and four of five against Edmonton coming into the game...British Columbia plays at Winnipeg on October 18...The Eskimos play in Toronto next Friday...Prefontaine's longest field goal was from 54 yards.
