  Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - The Los Angeles Avengers of the suspended Arena Football League have decided to cease operations.

  In a statement on the team's website, the Avengers announced their decision to fold.

  "The entire Avengers organization extends heartfelt thanks to the fans who cheered on their team, it was their faithful support that kept the Avengers vibrant and energized for nearly a decade," the statement read.

  In nine seasons, the Avengers had a record of 65-73 with a 1-5 playoff mark. They were 5-11 in 2008 and did not qualify for the playoffs.

  The AFL decided to cancel the 2009 season in the wake of the economy, hoping to resume play in 2010 with a long-term plan.
