  • Hayward paces Marquette over No. 15 Michigan


    Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - Lazar Hayward scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds, leading Marquette to a 79-65 victory over 15th-ranked Michigan in the semifinals of the Old Spice Classic.

    Jimmy Butler added 17 points and nine boards for the Golden Eagles (6-0), who beat Xavier by 10 points in the tournament opener on Thursday and will play the winner between Alabama and Florida State in Sunday's title game.

    Manny Harris scored 22 points to lead Michigan (3-1), which needed overtime to topCreightonin the first roundand will face the loser of the Alabama/Florida State game in the consolation contest.

    Michigan trailed by nine at the break, but quickly got back into it with a 12-4 run to start the second half. A three-pointer by Laval Lucas-Perry just over four minutes in pulled the Wolverines within 48-47.

    A dunk by Butler on the ensuing possession ignited a string of 10 straight Marquette points. Hayward scored six during the burst and his layup with just under 12 1/2 minutes remaining gave the Eagles a 58-47 advantage.

    The Wolverines clawed to within 62-56 five minutes later on a layup by Zack Gibson, but Marquette again pulled away with six straight points and Michigan never threatened again.

    Harris scored the first two points of the game for Michigan, but Marquette ran off eight in a row from there. The Wolverines tied it at 15-15 on a three- pointer by Lucas-Perry, but Marquette followed with a 13-1 run.

    A Hayward jumper capped the surge and gave the Eagles a 28-16 lead with 9 1/2 minutes remaining in the half. Michigan trimmed the deficit to seven before heading to the intermission down 44-35.

    Game Notes Lucas-Perry finished with 12 for Michigan...Darius Johnson-Odom scored 14 for Marquette, while Dwight Buycks chipped in 13...All six of Marquette's victories have come by double digits...Michigan still leads the all-time series, 13-6, but this was the first meeting since 1990.
