  • Lakers All-Star guard Kobe Bryant sat out his second straight game due to a sprained left ankle. LA was also missing Andrew Bynum (bruised right hip), but Gasol filled the center role nicely.

    Lamar Odom chipped in 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Ron Artest scored 18 for the Lakers, who moved to 25-4 at home this season. They've won seven of their last nine games overall.

NBA

  • It appeared as if the Warriors were on their way to snapping an eight-game losing streak, but the Mavericks outscored the hosts 37-19 in the final frame to earn just their second win in six games, which included a home setback to the lowly Timberwolves on Friday.

    Jason Kidd recorded 17 points and 12 assists, while Josh Howard and Drew Gooden added 25 and 24 points, respectively, for Dallas, which received a 15- point, eight-rebound effort from Dirk Nowitzki. Gooden also pulled down 10 caroms in a winning cause.

NBA

  • James led the league in scoring with 35.0 points per game, as the Cavaliers went 3-0. On Saturday, James set a franchise record by scoring 35 points in the first half of a win over New York. He also tied a career-high with 15 assists in a victory over Memphis on February 2.

    This is James' fifth weekly award this season.

WOMANS COLLEGE BASKETBALL

  • Glory Johnson, Angie Bjorklund and Alyssia Brewer each contributed 10 points for the Lady Vols (21-2, 9-1 SEC), who upended the Commodores in Knoxville on January 17.

    Merideth Marsh led Vanderbilt (17-7, 6-5) with 19 points. Jence Rhoads added 15, and Lauren Lueders 12.

  • Carter scored nine during a 19-0 rally in the second half of Sunday's 96-89 win at Boston. The veteran was on fire again in the late going against the Hornets.

    He finished the game 19-of-27 from the field, including 6-of-10 from three-point range.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

  • Jermaine Dixon added 18 points for the Panthers (18-6), who had lost four of six and resume conference play on Friday against rival West Virginia. Brad Wanamaker had 12 points and 10 rebounds in the win for Pitt, which is a perfect 28-0 against Robert Morris in its history.

    Karon Abraham led the Colonials (16-9) with 16 points, but Robert Morris' nine-game win streak came to a screeching halt. Russell Johnson added 11 points, while Velton Jones and Mezie Nwigwe had 10 each in the setback.

WOMANS COLLEGE BASKETBALL

  • Krystal Thomas added 11 points for the Blue Devils (19-4, 7-1 ACC), who responded after being upset by Boston College on Thursday. Allison Vernerey, Jasmine Thomas and Shay Selby each had 10 points in the resounding victory.

    She'la White and Laura Broomfield had 10 points to lead the Tar Heels (16-6, 4-4), who have now lost three straight.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

  • Willie Veasley added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs (21-4, 14-0 Horizon), who clinched at least a share of their fourth straight league title with their 13th consecutive victory.

    Butler will go for the outright championship against Youngstown State on Thursday.

  • Augustus, the WNBA's all-time leader in points per game (21.2), tore her ACL last season after just six games.

    According to a Minnesota newspaper, Augustus' new contract is a multi-year deal with an annual salary of $101,500, the veterans' maximum.

  • Kaman, a seventh-year pro, is in the midst of his best NBA season averaging a career-high 20.2 points and 9.0 rebounds, while shooting 49.7 percent from the field through 44 games. The oft-injured 7-footer will be making his first All- Star appearance.

    It was announced Saturday that Roy would be held out until after the break to help heal a strained right hamstring.

WOMANS COLLEGE BASKETBALL

  • The Huskies (23-0) enter the week with a 62-game winning streak, just eight shy of the record set by a UConn team from 2001-03. Connecticut received all 40 first-place votes and a total of 1,000 points from a nationwide media panel to extend its record reign atop the poll to 38 consecutive weeks.

    Stanford (21-1), with its only loss coming against UConn, again held at No. 2, while unbeaten Nebraska (21-0) moved up one spot to third. Notre Dame fell one spot to fourth, with Tennessee, Xavier, Ohio State, Duke, West Virginia and Florida State completing this week's top 10.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

  • The Jayhawks (22-1) regained the top spot last week after spending the first eight weeks of the season atop the rankings before their lone loss of the season on January 10 at Tennessee. Kansas received 55 first-place votes, one more than last week, and a total of 1,613 points from a nationwide media panel.

    Syracuse (23-1) moved up one spot, garnering eight first-place votes, while Kentucky also climbed one spot to third. The Wildcats, who spent one week at No. 1, picked up a pair of top tallies.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

  • The Bulldogs are enjoying another terrific season at 20-4 and on Saturday they continued their winning ways with a 74-62 besting of Wright State. The victory improved Butler to a school-record 13-0 in conference play and a win tonight would already guarantee the program at least a share of the HL title. The Bulldogs have also won 12 straight games overall, marking the fourth-longest streak in school history.

    Loyola meanwhile, suffered a narrow 59-56 defeat on Saturday to Cleveland State. It was the fifth loss in six games for the Ramblers, who are now just 4-9 in league play after going 9-1 against non-conference opponents.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

  • Bill Self's Jayhawks sit atop the Big 12 standings with a flawless 8-0 record. The team has won 22 of its 23 games on the year and enters this tilt with an eight-game win streak in tow, including Saturday's 75-64 win over Nebraska in Lawrence. The victory extended the nation's longest homecourt winning streak to 55 games.

    The Longhorns looked like the team to beat in the Big 12 just a few weeks ago, but they have hit a wall of late, losing four of their last six games, including an 80-71 setback at Oklahoma on Saturday. With the loss, Texas fell to 5-3 in league play.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

  • Villanova dropped a 103-90 decision at Georgetown on Saturday in a game that was never really close. That setback halted an 11-game win streak for the Wildcats, who are now 20-2 overall and 9-1 in league action. They had recorded four consecutive double-digit triumphs prior to Saturday's loss.

    As for West Virginia, it has quietly put together a six-game win streak to move to 19-3 overall and 8-2 in conference. The club has posted back-to-back 19-point victories, including Saturday's 79-60 decision over St. John's. Expect the Mountaineers to play with a wealth of confidence this evening, as they are 9-1 at home this season.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

  • Robert Morris enters this tilt playing its best ball of the season, as the club has won its last nine games to move to 16-8 overall and 11-1 in league action. The Colonials are fresh off Saturday's 75-63 triumph over St. Francis (PA), and the hope tonight is that the club can improve a 6-5 road record. Robert Morris has played only one other Big East Conference opponent this season, as the club was crushed in the opener by Syracuse, 100-60.

    Pittsburgh carried a two-game skid into Saturday's clash with Seton Hall, and the Panthers had lost four of their last five entering that showdown. Fortunately, they knocked off the Pirates by an 83-58 final to move to 17-6 overall and 7-4 in conference. There is reason for confidence tonight, as t

  • Each year around this time the Spurs hit the road while the annual San Antonio Livestock Show and Rodeo takes over the AT&T Center.

    Gregg Popovich's team set up temporary residence in Hollywood on Saturday and improved to 2-1 on its season-long eight-game trek when George Hill scored 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting, and the Spurs notched their 15th straight win over the Clippers with a 98-81 blowout win.

NBA

  • Dallas will also visit Denver and Oklahoma City on the road trip, and owns a 16-10 mark outside of Big D this season. It has lost four of its last five games, including Friday's 117-108 setback versus the Minnesota Timberwolves at American Airlines Center.

    Dirk Nowitzki finished with 21 points and eight rebounds for the Mavericks, who lost to the Timberwolves for the first time since January 4, 2006. Nowitzki didn't get the start because he was late for shootaround. Jason Terry tallied 20 points, while Rodrigue Beaubois added a season-high 17 points off the bench in defeat.

  • Orlando posted a 96-89 triumph over the Celtics on Sunday at TD Garden, as Vince Carter posted 20 points and Dwight Howard finished with 16 points and 13 rebounds for the Southeast Division-leading Magic, who battled back from an 11-point halftime deficit.

    "I think we just came out with a lot of intensity. I was upset about how we played in the first half, it wasn't as well as we wanted to," Howard said. "We came out in the second half with a lot of energy, defensively moved our feet, we were talking more and that's what got us the big lead." Jameer Nelson had 15 points and Rashard Lewis netted 14 in the win, Orlando's eighth in its last 10 tries. The Magic will put its 19-5 home mark to the test Monday night and are one game ahead of Atlanta in the division standings.

WOMANS COLLEGE BASKETBALL

  • Nnemkadi Ogwumike had 16 points and 13 rebounds, Jayne Appel added 15 points and 13 rebounds while Rosalyn Gold-Onwude donated 11 points for the Cardinal (21-1, 11-0 Pac-10), who have won 12 straight since a loss to top-ranked UConn on December 23.

    Jacki Gemelos had 13 points and six boards while Briana Gilbreath added 11 points and five boards for the Women of Troy (13-9, 7-4), who have dropped three straight.

WOMANS COLLEGE BASKETBALL

  • Amber Harris had 14 points, Special Hennings added 12 points while Tyeasha Moss had 11 points and six rebounds for the Musketeers (18-3, 8-0 A-10), who have won nine straight. Ta'Shia Phillipes pulled down 16 rebounds.

    Abby Oliver had 19 points and Brittani Shells added 11 points for the Spiders (15-8, 4-4), who have dropped four of their last five.

NBA

  • Jameer Nelson added 15 points and Rashard Lewis 14 for the Magic, who previously notched a win in Boston back in November -- then edged the C's in Orlando on January 28 to help take the season series 3-1.

    Rajon Rondo put forth a solid effort with 17 points, nine assists and eight rebounds for the Celtics, who had a three-game win streak broken.
