  • Alomar, Larkin among first-timers on 2010 Hall of Fame ballot

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Second baseman Robert Alomar and shortstop Barry Larkin -- both 12-time All-Stars -- were among the 15 first-time candidates on the 2010 baseball Hall of Fame ballot released Friday.

Also on that list is Edgar Martinez, who is the first primary designated hitter up for consideration. The lifetime Mariner is a career .312 hitter with a .418 on-base percentage.

Other new candidates include first basemen Fred McGriff, who had 493 career homers, and Andres Gallarraga, a career .288 hitter with 399 round-trippers.

Other first-year candidates are Robin Ventura, Eric Karros, Ellis Burks, Ray Lankford, David Segui, Todd Zeile, Shane Reynolds, Kevin Appier, Pat Hentgen, and Mike Jackson The first-timers join 11 holdovers from 2009, when Rickey Henderson and Jim Rice gained entrance.

Candidates must be named on 75 percent of the ballots cast by members of the Baseball Writers' Association of America with 10 or more consecutive years' experience to gain entry into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Andre Dawson and Bert Blyleven are the only incumbents to receive more than 50 percent of the vote a year ago. Dawson, the 1987 NL MVP, received 67 percent in his eighth year of eligibility, and Blyleven earned 62.7 percent in his 12th.

Other holdover candidates are Harold Baines, Don Mattingly, Mark McGwire, Jack Morris, Dale Murphy, Dave Parker, Tim Raines, Lee Smith, Alan Trammell.

Results from the balloting will be announced January 6, 2010.
