  • Red Sox send Buchholz down after rough outing

Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox have optioned pitcher Clay Buchholz to Double-A Portland after the righty's latest shellacking in Wednesday's 11-6 loss to Baltimore.

Buchholz gave up three hits and five runs while walking three batters in just 2 1/3 innings, prompting the demotion. In addition to Wednesday's setback, Boston is just 3-12 when Buchholz starts and 70-42 when anyone else takes the hill.

The 24-year-old is 2-9 with a 6.75 earned run average in 16 games this season.

Buchholz threw a no-hitter against the Orioles on September 1, 2007.
