FOOTBALL

  • According to the Boston Herald, Crumpler will help replace the void created by the departures of tight ends Benjamin Watson and Chris Baker.

    Crumpler spent the last two seasons in Tennessee and caught 27 passes for 222 yards and a touchdown in 16 games in 2009. He recorded four straight years of at least five touchdowns for the Falcons from 2004-07 but has served primarily as a blocking tight end in recent years.

  • Babin played in 12 games last season and recorded 20 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks for Philadelphia, which had a right-of-first-refusal clause written into Babin's previous contract.

    "We're happy our deal with Jason worked out," said Titans general manager Mike Reinfeldt. "He's a high-energy player and a good pass rusher, and he fits what we do very well. He has all offseason to come in and work with Coach (Jim) Washburn and become a part of our rotation at defensive end." The 29-year-old has played in parts of seven seasons for Philadelphia, Kansas City, Seattle and Houston, which made him a first-round pick (27th overall) in 2004 out of Western Michigan.

BASKETBALL

  • Jaime Printy and Kamille Wahlin netted 15 points apiece in the win for Iowa (20-13).

    Morgan Johnson and Kelly Krei contributed healthy efforts as well, scoring 12 and 10 points, respectively.

  • Denis Clemente added 19 points, and Curtis Kelly scored 10 for the second- seeded Wildcats (28-7), who advanced to Salt Lake City to play in the Sweet 16 against the winner of Sunday's game between third seed Pittsburgh and sixth seed Xavier.

    Pullen, who made all 11 of his foul shots, went 7-of-12 from three-point range.

  • Twins outfielder Jacque Jones collided with the catcher after trying to score from second base on a single. Jones was called out as Navarro hung onto the ball.

    The catcher then fell to the ground clutching his left leg as medical assistance quickly came to the scene. Charlotte Sports Park personnel loaded the catcher onto the cart and drove him off the field for x-rays, where the injury was determined.

  • Jochen Hecht, Patrick Kaleta and Mike Grier lit the lamp for the Sabres, who improved to 2-1-1 on a five-game road trip and are now seven points ahead of the Senators for first in the Northeast Division.

    Ottawa lost in Dallas on Saturday.

SOCCER

  • MLS commissioner Don Garber confirmed the announcement when he told a teleconference,"We have signed a new five-year collective bargaining agreement." The MLS Players Union had earlier stated that they would strike if a new deal was not agreed upon by the start of season, which is scheduled to open on Thursday, March 25.

    However, it now appears as though the opening game between the expansion Philadelphia Union and Seattle Sounders FC will go ahead as scheduled after the two sides signed the agreement early Saturday afternoon.

MOTOR_RACING

  • Allgaier, the 2009 rookie of the year in the series, passed Keselowski after a restart with 27 laps remaining. He then held off several challenges by his teammate in the final laps to record his first win in his 43rd start.

    Kyle Busch finished third, while Carl Edwards and Kevin Harvick rounded out the top-five.

  • Keselowski edged Joey Logano for the top starting position with a lap of 124.557 m.p.h. for his second pole of the season and the fifth of his Nationwide career. He also won the pole at Bristol last August.

    Logano qualified 0.1 seconds behind Keselowski to capture the outside pole.

TENNIS

  • The 20th-seeded Ljubicic, from Croatia, posted a surprise semifinal victory. topping defending champion Nadal, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1).

    In the second semifinal, the seventh-seeded Roddick dispatched sixth-seeded Swede Robin Soderling, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

  • The 20th-seeded Croat downed favored third-seeded Spaniard Rafael Nadal, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) to gain a berth in Sunday's final.

    Nadal -- who won here in 2007 and 2009 -- breezed through the first set in a half hour, but Ljubicic roared back with four straight points in the second to win the set. The 31-year-old then toughed out a final set which took nearly an hour to complete to earn the victory.

GOLF

  • Furyk finished 54 holes at 11-under 202 and is three strokes clear of a talented group of golfers at the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club.

    Defending champion and two-time U.S. Open winner Retief Goosen (70), two-time Transitions winner K.J. Choi (67), Bubba Watson (70) and 2005 champion Carl Pettersson (70) are knotted in second place at minus-eight.

  • Oosthuizen, who holds a piece of the 54-hole lead for the first time on the European Tour, completed three rounds at 20-under-par 198.

    The South African is a five-time winner on the Sunshine Tour, but is searching for his first title on the European circuit.

BOXING

  • Fighting before nearly 51,000 fans at the Esprit Arena, Klitschko (54-3, 48 KOs) landed a big left hook to finally send Chambers back to the ropes as official time of the stoppage came with five seconds left in the fight.

    This was the first bout for Klitschko since last June when he dominated Ruslan Chagaev in a fight that was stopped between the ninth and 10th rounds.

HORSES

  • Setting the pace in the Florida Derby was 9-5 favorite Rule along with Pulsion on the inside. Running just behind the two leaders was Game On Dude and 5-2 second choice Radiohead.

    As the field entered the far turn Pulsion had a nose lead over Rule as longshot Pleasant Prince began his move from the back of the 11 horse field. Around the turn for home Rule shook off Pulsion for the lead as Pleasant Prince and Ice Box rallied on the outside.

  • One of those is the 5-2 morning line favorite in Saturday's Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park.

    Rule faces a field of 10 in the Grade 1 race, his first start since taking the Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs last month. The son of Roman Ruler easily disposed of five rivals that day, including Schoolyard Dreams, who recently finished second by a nose to Odysseus in the Tampa Bay Derby. Pletcher's colt prevailed gate to wire that day winning by three lengths stopping the clock in 1:44 seconds for the 1 1/16-mile race.
