Olympic Field Events - Pole Vault

In the pole vault, competitors sprint down a runway with a long, flexible pole which they use to help them leap over a high, horizontal bat. Competitors have three attempts to clear the bar, and the bar is progressively raised throughout the competition. Competitors receive a foul for knocking the bar off.

The pole vault consists of the following processes:

• The approach - the competitor sprints down the runway
• The plant and take-off - the final 3 steps to the box, and the jump
• The swing and row - the competitor causes the bending motion of the pole
• The extension - the competitor propels upward almost upside down
• The turn - the spin of the competitor's body over the bar
• The fly-away - when the competitor releases the bar so it falls away from the bar
