  • Roulette, which means “small wheel” in French, is the most popular game of chance played in Europe. It was either invented in China and brought to Europe by Dominican monks that traded in the Orient or by 17th Century French mathematician Blaise Pascal.

Frenchmen Francois and Louis Blanc developed single “0” roulette, known as European roulette, in 1842. As the brothers introduced their game to France and Germany, gambling was prohibited in both countries.

  • Las Vegas quickly took notice because the game is based on Five Card Stud, very popular in the United States that many players easily recognize.

First, players ante up, receive their cards and get to view one of the dealer’s. They just play the hands dealt them. If players believe they can’t beat the dealer, they fold. If they think they have a better hand, they can increase their wager.

  • I liked playing blackjack at “third place” long before I knew what it meant. The official definition: last player’s seat to the dealer’s right.

Up until then, the only routine I recall concerning that term was the 1945 film “The Naughty Nineties” staring my favorite comedy team, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello.

  • “Since the debut of the World Poker Tour and all the TV tournaments that it has spawned, everyone wants to play poker,” says Bill Burton, Internet casino guide and columnist. He’s author of “1000 Best Casino Gambling Secrets” and “Get the Edge at Low Limit Texas Hold’em” available online at www.billburton.com.

“I know how to play all the games in the casino although there are many I choose not to play because of the house edge,” he says. “It is this knowledge that I pass along. The greatest asset a player can have is being ‘Casino Literate.’ ”

  • It’s likely blackjack was born after paper was invented around the 10th Century in China or Korea. Around the 14th Century, playing cards gradually spread across Europe, modifications being made as they passed through each country. Most likely “Vingt et Un” (French for 21) was inspired from earlier games and originated in French casinos in the early 1700s.

Blackjack came to the United States in the mid-1860s when gambling was legal in the western U.S. In 1910, Nevada outlawed casinos, but had a change of heart in ’31 and imposed regulations to protect players. Over the years it has spread throughout the world and is probably the No. 1 casino game on the Internet.

  • Dice can be traced to prehistoric times when primordial fortunetellers threw sacred arrows, bone, sticks and stones on the ground to predict the future for his tribe. A cubical die dating back to 600 B.C. was found in Egypt.

Dice went through a long evolution of shape, size, form and markings. They were made of wood, stones, bones, animal teeth and horns, nutshells and seeds. American Indians fashioned four-sided knucklebones for dice.
